I mean, I understand the story, but it just felt clunky to have that pairing and how is saving a unicorn wasting away in a tree at all analogous to cleaning your room? One may result in illness and death. The other will simply result in grumpy parents--unless you had way different stuff in your room than I did in mine as a kid.

I also was thrown by the ending in which it seemed that the princess was, in fact, a regular kid dreaming herself into the whole setting of the story. That's fine, but that's out of character for the Serendipity books that I've read because they're all set in this sort of mythical Other place. Making it "real" in the sense of recognizably modern just made the whole thing feel much more like finger-wagging, which these usually don't.

Alas was a trio composed by Gustavo Moretto playing keyboards, wind instruments and also vocals, Alex Zucker on bass and guitars, and Carlos Riganti on percussion, all of them are excellent musicians, very talented and we can notice it while listening to their music.

In they released their self-titled album and probably better known, they choose among their music, only 4 songs in this debut album but each one full of creativity and mind- blowing moments, honestly Alas became quickly in one of my favorite bands from Argentina, and believe me that that country has been very prolific in the progressive rock movement. There is a part which is beautiful, very soft and calm, an exquisite flute sound, along with some birds singing and also the sound of the air, making a charming moment in this long song, then a drums solo and then it returns to the bombastic music.

The first track is called Buenos Aires solo es piedra and as soon as it starts there can be heard some Chick Corea infuence in Alas' music. After this fast introduction , really calm vocals appear over an almost unhearable layer of Rhodes piano , pretty much like RTF first record specially the track Crystal silence.

This section also reminds me of some of the jazziest Canterbury acts like National Health , Gilgamesh or Hatfield's first album. Right after this part finishes we can hear Moretto's moog reminding me of ELP but without being bombastic at all. At minutes there comes a little part with some trumpet by Moretto and some percussion by Carlos Riganti bells and maracas to be more specific.

The song keeps on changing moode sometimes reworking on some of the themes that already were developed. La muerte conto el dinero opens with vocals in the same mood as the previous song. Then it develops into a ELP ish section up to the fourth minute , the interplay between the musicians is top notch. At minutes Moretto sings again a brief part and some bird whistle like becomes prominent above a really spacey section. After this , a brief drum solo starts , this section is a little inconsistent for my tastes.

Luckily this soon fades away and we face another fast section before the song comes to an end. Aire is the first of the two bonus tracks and while is not long it's quite interesting. There's no doubt that this album has, amidst its odd spacey touches, a more urban vibe and a more intimate, emotional feel than the debut, coming as a consequence of its jazzier focus. Following the dynamic closing of "A Quienes Sino", the album's title track picks up right where the last one left off.

A more uptempo number, "Pinta Tu Aldea" is a technical showcase of all involved in the band, including a guest appearance of the accordion-like bandoneon, which features prominently.

Not that it steals the show, of course; the bass lines are impeccably played and even the slower, more open-styled keyboard interlude in the middle still manages to keep things interesting, even if the energy level dips down a little. In fact, the more lounge-y style of the keyboard solo reveals just how deep of a sound these guys had with such limited recording technology back in late 70's Buenos Aires.

In all, side one consists of two powerhouse tracks, which more than make up for any potential complaints that one may have had with their first album. Side two packs just as much excitement as the first one, with the rhythmic hustle-and-bustle of "La Caza Del Mosquito". Aznar's guitar lines in here interweave so well with the flute parts; this track is just so infectiously lovable.

After a lot of stopping and starting, with strong dynamic contrasts to boot, it finally gives way to the softness of the album's closer, "Silencio de Aguas Profundas". With no percussion to be heard for the last 13 minutes, the final song's slowly developing smooth lounge jazz and tango-esque qualities offer a symmetry of sorts to the album, fading off in much the same way it faded in.

I'm struggling to pin down a rating between 4 and 5 stars for this one. On one hand, it isn't necessarily an "essential" buy, but it really is flawless. I can't think of a wasted second on the whole album. As such, I'll leave it with only 4 stars but I won't be able to stress enough just how highly I'd recommend it to fusion lovers and anyone who wants to explore prog from outside of Europe. Check this one out! These guys found a way to sound thoroughly modern for and yet allowed their bountiful heritage to remain prominent in the arrangements.

Pinta tu Aldea surprised me around almost every corner. Gorgeous stuff. The major gripe I have against this type of "compilation" is that as usual, the original artworks are sacrificed with something that usually has nothing to do with the albums, and such is the case here.

While Paul Kantner and Grace Slick persued sonic experiments,resulting in the formation of the Starship, Jorma revisits his folk-blues roots. The results are unlike any album release of that era. The album has been out of print for sometime and has become a treasured object for fans of both the Airplane and Kaukonen.

It is a timeless relic which should be heard by a wider audience. The brightly colored figurative art on the cover, by Jorma's former wife, predates the splashy street art of uptown Manhattan in the s. Like the album, the artwork is completely unique and unprecedented. Jorma is in excellent voice as he blazes through the intricate fingerpicking stylings of Harlem's Gary Davis and the master picker Blind Blake.

I've never been fond of Mr. Kaukonen's vocals, but his picking here, and on other recordings, as well as in live performance, is a thing of beauty.

But rarely does this technique sound as effortless and graceful as here. Halfway through the song, a beautiful string melody intertwines with the main lead, and it sounds just as vigorous as the distorted guitar in "Open.

This is exactly why many Cure fans hate it, but I can't get enough. This was always part of The Cure. Robert Smith always had a bit of the lounge lizard in him, the dandy who likes to visit exotic places and stay in luxurious hotels, where he has numerous affairs with sophisticated demimondaines. This album has the best pop section of The Cure's entire discography. The songs are playful and fun, with the light touch I mentioned earlier.

For example, "Mint Car" basically repeats "Friday I'm In Love," but it greatly improves on the formula, sounding less laboured and more energetic and delirious. It even has a brief but cool guitar solo.

And "Mint Car" is actually the least creative of the lot. Other songs contain some dazzlingly inventive music. My favourite is "Gone," which is based on an angular bass line. The rhythm suggests some sort of jazz or Caribbean music, but the production gives the bass a deep, cavernous sound, a hint of darkness.

It is a really interesting sound; if "Gone" wasn't successful as a single, it's only because no one was ready for it. Meanwhile, "The 13th" is a drunken mariachi song with woozy, cheerful horns, and "Strange Attraction" glitters with an impossibly clean, gorgeous keyboard line. Another great thing about Wild Mood Swings is the writing. Wild Mood Swings, however, recalls the good old days when he was quite a strong poet. Don't believe me? Smith's writing has this sort of detail throughout most of the album, even the slow, sad, somewhat less thrilling numbers.

Kinda wasn't quite what I'd hoped for, you know? The album's only real weakness is "Club America," because the music consists of the same overbearing flood of wah-wah as "Cut" from Wish. The lyrics are actually not bad, but all the squealing feedback drowns them out, and the song is quite long five minutes, third-longest on the album.
