Im Butta - Mz Mali* - New World Order (CD, Album)

La Difference explores the issues faced by societal outcasts of all kinds, and this deeply personal album should resonate with anyone who's ever felt that way. A good portion of the country of Mali falls in the Sahara Desert , home of the nomadic Tuareg people, a Berber people who are neither fully accepted as citizens of any African country, nor do they have independence. The latter was promised to them at one point by Moammar Gadhafi, and many Tuareg youth joined up in his forces.

The members of Tinariwen were among those, and they met each other in Gadhafi's training camps. There were some powerful compositions that we were able to do on some songs. Some crazy features that are on there. I feel that if it's the next season from what we did on the last project, I'm very confident in what's going to happen.

So yes, I think that's a big part of what I should carry in this wave or this next era as a our pillars and legends die. Just as a side note, I was in the studio and heard some Marvin Gaye stems, meaning a producer or engineer has access to Marvin Gaye's sessions. I heard his lead and backgrounds, it was unreal. I say this to say we are in an information age where music is becoming information and it has to be super special to become something special.

Everybody's doing music, but if you want to do music for real, it has to be something special. And I think that every single song on this second of this album is that.

It's been a lot of great music coming out so I'm grateful to be in this collage, this attempt to resurrect or restore creative, clean, beautiful art.

Well, I'm so tempted but I don't want to go too far into it. Everyone was able to get a huge glimpse of my feature with Jhene Aiko which was "Contradiction," one of my favorite songs. A Media Luz (Dim All The Lights) - Donna Summer - A Media Luz (Dim All The Lights) (Vinyl)

She said something about the show being an hour and forty five minutes. I said the email I got said it was an hour and forty minutes. Then I overheard a bartender tell a customer the show was an hour and a half. We decided to quickly get to our seats before the show was simply over. Our seats were high up but we had a perfect view. The two people not directly in front of us kept kissing every few minutes. The woman in front of me kept talking to the man in front of S, which meant we had to keep leaning in the opposite direction.

Basically, S and I watched Summer slanted way too the left. Summer was the first female artist to accomplish this feat of having two songs in the top 3 singles on the Billboard Hot chart. She had originally intended to give the song to Rod Stewart but changed her mind. According to Billboard , the song is about sex. The recording is remarkable for a sustained note held by Summer for about 16 seconds.

Laura Branigan had a Top 40 Dance hit in with her cover version. A video for the single, showing Branigan surrounded by a bevy of drag queens Miss Understood , Hedda Lettuce and Vivacious , was her last, and the release was the end of her association with the label, as she left the music industry to care for her husband, who had been diagnosed with cancer.

Overseas Telegram - Mick Harvey - Intoxicated Man (CD, Album)

A culmination of his craft, Harvey shifted easily through a number of settings, from the rollicking tribute to American outlaws "Bonnie and Clyde" to the dripping sentimentality of "Overseas Telegram. Harvey contributed to most songs, but the sparse and reserved material called into question the necessity of the group.

He composed his tenth collection of film music for Andrew Dominik's Chopper, in A few years later, Harvey created the original score for Australian Rules, a film by director Paul Goldman.

In , he resumed his solo career with One Man's Treasure. A selection of his film scores appeared as Motion Picture Music from EMI in , followed later in the year by a new studio album, Two of Diamonds. Harvey left the Bad Seeds in the late s.

He recorded his first post-Bad Seeds solo album in late His first album of all-original material, Sketches from the Book of the Dead, was released internationally by Mute in May of Though that effort of self-penned tracks was almost universally well-received, the ever-mercurial Harvey did a near about face for his next release.

Featuring a well-chosen selection of covers interspersed with his own brief interludes and songs, Four Acts of Love was a cycle concerning the nature of romance and its power in the human experience. It was released in June of In , his two previous albums of Gainsbourg compositions were reissued as a double set, prompting a tour and the decision to record two more volumes.

The chanteur's reputation as being both the louchest of the louche and an undeniably talented and even touching songwriter which could also sort of be said for Cave, and definitely said for someone like Jarvis Cocker or the Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon, the latter two having collaborated with Gainsbourg's daughter, Charlotte is celebrated to the utmost on Intoxicated Man and Pink Elephants , released in and , respectively.

This insight is valuable, as -- in the English-speaking world -- during his day, much of Gainsbourg's talent was overshadowed by controversies and press stunts.

His encounter with Whitney Houston on a French television show has been referenced countless times by now. The kitsch factor that surrounds French pop from the '60s and '70s also does quite little in selling you on integrity. Harvey's interpretations are -- wisely -- both faithful to Gainsbourg and unique to the translator's own vision. Gainsbourg's work is celebrated while not seeming sacred. While a variety of the tracks are almost direct interpretations, a fair amount of drastic reworkings of lesser Gainsbourg cuts are present.

A song which originally appeared on one of Gainsbourg's reggae-influenced albums, Mauvaises nouvelles des etoiles , the version appearing on Intoxicated Man is an organ-and-string-drenched ballad delivered breathlessly by frequent Harvey collaborator Anita Lane.

In the process, a throwaway song from Gainsbourg's arguably weakest period is given a rich second life. Harvey's reworkings of some of Gainsbourg's more notorious fare shines a different light as well. This, as well as Harvey's sober delivery, substitutes an almost suffocating air of eeriness for the song's initial air of sleaziness.

Mick Harvey: Intoxicated Man / Pink Elephants our intense love of an album does not always mean it is a progressive release that will change the pop cultural climate. "Overseas Telegram.

With the name truncated to Mott, the band issued two LPs, of which this was the second. Tucked away at the end of side two of a generally disappointing album was yet another version of the by now much covered "Good Times", although not, it has to be said, one of the better ones.

Needless to say, they missed the mark, but we got a lot of awfully awesome things in return. The decade that gave birth to Millennials felt like it was in a constant state of identity crisis, and nothing showed that better than the music industry — everything from hair metal madness and synth pop classics to the birth of hip hop and the tide of new wave.

Here are the most popular album cassettes of the s. Talking Heads — Remain in Light. Often considered their magnus opus, Remain in Light is like a genre melting pot experiment. Not much. In some respects, the popular culture of the s reflected the era's political conservatism. For many people, the symbol of the decade was the "yuppie": a baby boomer with a college education, a well-paying job and expensive taste. Many people derided yuppies for being self-centered and materialistic, and surveys of young urban professionals across the country showed that they were, indeed, more concerned with making money and buying consumer goods than their parents and grandparents had been.

However, in some ways yuppiedom was less shallow and superficial than it appeared. They were successful, but they weren't sure they were happy. Youre Different - God Equals Genocide - Rattled Minds (Cassette, Album)

Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the Lord? The one whom he chooses he will bring near to him. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him. And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.

On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven. And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day.

He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant. And all flesh died that moved on the earth, birds, livestock, beasts, all swarming creatures that swarm on the earth, and all mankind.

Everything on the dry land in whose nostrils was the breath of life died. He blotted out every living thing that was on the face of the ground, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens. They were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ark. You shall surely destroy all the places where the nations whom you shall dispossess served their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree.

You shall tear down their altars and dash in pieces their pillars and burn their Asherim with fire. You shall chop down the carved images of their gods and destroy their name out of that place. You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way.

But you shall seek the place that the Lord your God will choose out of all your tribes to put his name and make his habitation there.

There you shall go, I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. No one comes to the Father except through me. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever!

For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, and with his wife's knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles' feet.

While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart?

You have not lied to men but to God. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits.

And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him. Ephraim's glory shall fly away like a bird— no birth, no pregnancy, no conception! Even if they bring up children, I will bereave them till none is left. Woe to them when I depart from them! Ephraim, as I have seen, was like a young palm planted in a meadow; but Ephraim must lead his children out to slaughter.

Give them, O Lord — what will you give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. Every evil of theirs is in Gilgal; there I began to hate them. Because of the wickedness of their deeds I will drive them out of my house. I will love them no more; all their princes are rebels. I will make Mount Seir a waste and a desolation, and I will cut off from it all who come and go.

Much bigger names than BOC who were never big hitmakers to begin with have tried but failed to make a significant dent in the singles market in their later years. The whole idea is ridiculous. I am getting a much clearer picture of that fact, of all of the allusions to Jesus in the OT, and to so many of the sections He was quoting. I am only scraping away the tiniest of layers which my own pride in my own intellect has cast over my interpretation and I realize over and over again that the Bible is right and I am wrong.

As I have heard many times, it is folly to chastise one another over debatable points but necessary that we hold fast to the essentials. We know that God is all good and all loving.

He has solved the problem of evil once for all and reconciled His children to Him by entering into history and covering us with His righteousness. He has also ordained for all men to die once, whether in Canaan by the sword or in a nursing home in the 21st century. A nice point. Still I wonder, in your search, why you chose a particular Christian version of religion, remember that this was originally a Jewish text but unless one is chooses to be a member of the obscure and rare Kariast sect, literalism is rejected.

Indeed I believe it is taught that a literal interpretation of the Old Testament or Torah to Jews is for the young and the stupid.

If only Christians understood this, there would be no need to struggle to make sense of stories such as this. Resolving whether God was morally culpable for ordering genocide is a peculiarly Christian issue. I appreciate your frank and honest discussion of how you approach this question.

I have to say that your approach strikes me as more intellectually engaged than others present company excepted I have heard on this topic. Here they are in admittedly stream-of-consciosness order:.

First and foremost this is true because it comes from the Ultimate Authority on issues to which we simply cannot reason the nature of the Trinity, the Incarnation, etc.

As a distant, fallible parallel note that some instition must interpret the U. I accept it on authority. I do NOT accept on the authority of the Scriptures themselves because, even though retrospectively correct, it would be circular reasoning. His father very wisely admonished him to first get a degree in philosophy, and then pursue theology. Not only could I not agree more with this advice, but the theologian is now world-renowed in his particular field… and that pattern has repeated itself.

Faith and Reason never contradict each other: they are the two wings upon which we rise to God. We start with the primary analogate as used in the first case, and then move away from that with the other analogates.

In a similar way, the primary analogate writ large is God AS Goodness Itself… and from there we understand lesser forms or perfections of goodness in contingent entities. In other words, our primary analogate is first understood in the contingent created world, and then we reason to Goodness Itself. Clearly, given an Infinite Being infinity here is note used in reductively in the mathematical sense the more we negate away from that Infinity, the more insight we gain into what God is not.

As an important aside, this is why St. We cannot, as it were, crowd him into a concept in his transcendence he escapes our concepts. Why Christianity? Moreover, the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation seem to me to weave the ethic of love into the very fabric of being. The three persons of the trinity are bound up in a continual and perfect love; and that love came down to humanity on the form of Christ for God so loved the world …. It is suggestive at most.

Where there is genuine compassion, there too is God; and that compassion is of God. For, as I believe, God is love. You are entitled to your reasons. Your approach is more of what I call an honest fideist and I have no issue with that.

Similarly for most Christians and Jews as I noted in the previous post that I know. I only draw issue, and this specifically does not include you, with Christian literalists who have to deal with issues such as God commanding genocide.

By contrast, I have asked the equivalent extremeley religious Jews, the ultra-orthodox Chabad this question and they gave the answer I already knew that I noted above and held by moderate Jews too.

Still the fact that Tom is exploring this topic is to be commended but lets see how it progresses. It is certainly a deep difficulty for literalists. I agree with almost everything you say. The one point of disagreement concerns appeal to authority.

And I would assume that this is the only world there is. Indeed much that I know about the world I know only because I have quite rightly taken it on authority. My answer is absolutely not. But here we face a wholly different problem. Can we know that God wills anything at all? The short answer is yes, we can know what God has willed. That knowledge comes to us today in a manner entirely different from the way it came to the OT nation of Israel as we have been discussing it: it comes by way of his written word, the Bible.

Anything that is affirmed in there as the will of God in context of the whole , is something I can know to have been willed by God. If I ever had any kind of impression that God was directing me to do something questionable, I would have to test that feeling against the knowledge I have of his will in his word, which I know he will not contradict.

You also asked Dave about reason and the human condition. You might look here , as well as at the answers Dave produces. You are very much addressing my concern over this issue. Your approach, from what I have seen so far, on this point is much better. On the other hand it banned any extra-judicial killings and made the level of evidence far higher than a US court for executions too.

I do not know how the murderer of George Tiller could justify his action but is there anything in Christianity that bans extra-judicial killings? Maybe this is wandering off topic too far. I note this because the Bible is open to a variety of interpretations and what you read from it may not be the same as someone elses — such as killers of abortion doctors. Franklin, please realize that I am a lay convert to Christianity and some of my thoughts are probably definitely? I use blogs such as this to challenge my own thinking and to learn where I am wrong, so please do not consider anything I might write as authoritative.

Whenever I discover a doctrine that discomfits me I dig deeper to find out why. I may very well be, and often am, quite wrong. As for the genocide ordered by God in the conquest of Israel, I think there are some misconceptions that we, as modern westerners, whether Christian or not, are susceptible to. This is the point of Genesis where we are told of the Creation, Fall, and Flood. You may disagree with the doctrine, but it does have a place in Biblical exegesis and much of what the Bible teaches cannot be properly understood without it.

That is an indisputable fact, even if the biotechies or computertechies discover a way to prolong life, the universe itself is mortal. Our lives are a gift from God, and we live at the sufferance of God. God, out of mercy and love, determined to redeem the creation He had made. He values and loves it, even though it is corrupted, and initiated a program to bring the intransigent world back into the fold. That program included setting a people group aside from the rest of the world and using that group to transmit His message of redemption.

One has a God-given conscience and knows that something is of God because conscience approves it. Again, we need to read what the Bible says in context before we can apply our judgement to the content. The Bible tells us that our conscience was corrupted, along with the rest of creation, at the Fall.

Conscience can be a guide to our morality, and sometimes it can be a goad to immorality. I am posting a link to an essay by J. He does a better job than I of explaining it. Challenge me wherever you think I have erred. I need it. Very observant of you and correct… but with an important nuanced missed: of course I view for example Einstein as an authority on special and general relativity.

On the level of human beings , technically speaking the authority to interpret Divine revelation is per se essential authority, while the authority to explain knowledge of the real world is per accidens contingent authority.

Why did I preface that with on the level of human beings? Because on the level of or from the perspective of God, HE is the per se authority… which harkens back to what I noted about starting from our order of knowing primary analogates based on our order of being. Even the Hebrews, who were instructed by God to kill all of the Canaanites — men, women, and children — did not, in fact, do as they were instructed, a deriliction the consequences of which lead to the apostacy of Israel, the adoption of many Canaanite cultic practices including child sacrifice to Molech, and the Babylonian Captivity.

The Hebrews could not bring themselves, for whatever reason, to do what God instructed them to do, and they could not, as God presumably could, see the ultimate consequence of their failure. As noted above, the New Testament changes everything. Jesus Christ God in the flesh tells us to love our neighbor, to forgive our neighbor, to protect our neighbor, to suffer indignities for the benefit of our neighbor.

He does not tell us to take up the sword and kill our neighbor. The capacity to observe, analyze, and aquire knowledge. Lewis explains the difficulty in the link below. Chapter Three of C. I believe it is taught that a literal interpretation of the Old Testament or Torah to Jews is for the young and the stupid. The implication that all literal interpretation is for the young and stupid is theologically ignorant and personally derogatory to a large number of people.

You tell me to turn to the Bible. But how am I to read it? As a conversation partner with extraordinary depth but faults nonetheless, or as the inerrant word of God? If the latter, what is the key I will use to translate difficult passages; and what is the rubric I will use to tease a complete, coherent world-view out of it?

I am a fallen creature, yes. But not completely so, for if I were my redemption would be impossible. I think Dawkins would agree with that one.

Suspend your disbelief for a short time and read it as if it was a novel. Consider it an alternate history, a Terry Goodkind, sword and sorcery adventure. Can it stand on its own merits as a story? It seems to me that no matter which way I go, my own critical faculties will be drawn upon;…. Yes, they will. God has presented us with evidence that He is real and He is there.

It is for us to seek them and test them, but we must test them fairly, and be willing to accept a conclusion that we may not like. Most of it can still be read, but the program has glitches. We should be aware of this corruption and be skeptical of our capacity to reason correctly, but we may look at evidence and form conclusions nonetheless.

We can do no other. You might not recognize Him, but He will recognize you and make His presence plain. Or are we more? Do we not seek the true, the beautiful, and the good. How long is truth, how high is beauty, and what does goodness weigh? These are not physical things. How large is wisdom, and what is the breadth of justice? How is it that we can conceive an idea in our minds and turn that immaterial thought into a physical thing. What strange powers have we that we can discuss the nature of God and the universe?

Is it all chance and necessity, happenstance, matter in motion, no design, no purpose, nothing but blind pitiless indifference? It never fails to amaze me that foolishness that often passes for science. As I said the Halackah has its own range of problems, but in Judaism the Bible is not taken literally, the surface meaning is for the young and the stupid, it is all about messages beneath the surface. Its their book! It is all base don interpretation -what the call the oral law, which is a guide to intepreting the Torah and not reading it literally.

When we are forced to acknowledge this evil legacy, that is true brutality. Thank you for this! Yet in answering with an unequivocal no to the question of whether or not you would kill children are you claiming a moral superiority to the God depicted in parts of the Old Testament? Yet you obviously find the very suggestion of participating in genocide morally repugnant. So what is going on here? I cannot do it. I will not do it. Genocide is immoral.

I know this. And you know it too! Furthermore, such a position opens the door for all manner of evil to be justified in the name of God — something the human race has a long, tragic history of doing. For me, any variation of the first option is unacceptable. Perhaps you are comfortable with the second option — a mutating God who is in the process of learning and growing. I am not.

The immutability of God is foundational to my faith.

The title of it is Your Best Life Now. This is it. You better get the book, because your next life is going to be infinitely worse than this one. This is your best life now. And this is your best life, if your next life is in hell.

Oh, He does promise that. A full, rich, satisfying, trouble-free life of health and wealth and success and absolute joy and peace and perfection, but not now — not now. In fact, quite on the other hand, our Lord has promised, to those who know Him and love Him in this life, trouble, persecution, rejection, difficulty, trials, temptation, pain, suffering, sorrow, sickness and even physical death.

So for Christians, this is our worst life now. Your best life as a Christian begins when this life ends. Christians through the centuries have understood this, certainly the early Christians understood it. The Bible makes it clear.

Any sensible Christian understands that. Turn to 1 Peter chapter 1 — 1 Peter chapter 1. And there is a beautiful doxology, a hymn of praise that comes right after the introduction to this letter from the great apostle Peter. It starts in verse 3 and it runs down to verse 5, 1 Peter chapter 1 verse 3. Peter introduces his letter, verses 1 and 2, and then immediately launches in to a doxology of praise.

He is calling his readers to praise for something they do not currently have. He calls it an inheritance, reserved and protected and later to be revealed.

Now why would he be pointing them to the future? Why would he break out in this doxology with regard to things they do not possess? And the answer to that is because they were very realistic living in this world. We find that those to whom he writes are aliens in verse 1. And everywhere they went life was hard. They were believers in Christ so they were under persecution from the unbelieving and hostile world of pagan religion.

Life was very difficult for them. They were hated. They were abused. They were intimidated. They were troubled. They had very little resources. They were poor. They lived in a very difficult world. In fact, that is evident to anybody who reads this brief letter. Let me just help you to see that. But if when you do what is right and suffer for it, you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God.

They were doing right. They were honoring the Lord, living obediently to Him and they were suffering for it. Christ, he says, called you for this purpose, to suffer in this life. He also suffered for you and left you an example to follow in His steps. He showed you how to suffer unjustly. While suffering, He uttered no threats, kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously. Entrust yourself into the care of God when life is very hard, unfair, abusive, and intimidating.

But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. Do not fear their intimidation, do not be troubled. Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence. The hope, he says in verse 15, that is in you because this life is not going to be your best life.

Arm yourself. But to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exaltation.

You have a glorious future. Now back to our doxology in chapter 1. Clearly this life was not the best life for them. There are no promises in the Bible that this is our best life now. Our best life always is to come. And so Peter calls for a doxology, a celebration, exalted praise to God for the life to come. It is a hymn really that I read to you in verses 3 through 5. It is a call to worship the Lord God who has promised us eternal joy and blessing in the future, in an inheritance, a salvation to be revealed, a living hope.

We are to learn, the sooner the better, that our best life is not here and now. This doxology centers on our inheritance. We have a guaranteed reserved future that God has already determined and established. We understand the concept of an inheritance. We understand that an inheritance is something that comes to you in the future. In the Old Testament inheritance was a familiar word and it was used to describe the land of Canaan very often, because Canaan was the inheritance that God promised to the children of Israel.

This inheritance of the earthly Israel, this land of Canaan, the promised land, had begun with Abraham, the father of the nation Israel. There were hundreds of years between the promise of the inheritance and the realization of the inheritance. There were hundreds of years of bondage in Egypt, trouble in Egypt.

There were decades of wilderness wandering in which a whole generation of Jews died. They led a very troubled life until they entered into their inheritance finally. You might say that all the years waiting for their inheritance were years of very, very hard times. In fact, he is saying you should be so committed to that, that you burst spontaneously into praise, that you join me in this doxology for something you do not now possess. Yes you are children of God and therefore heirs of God and joint-heirs with Jesus Christ, yes you are waiting to possess your unimaginable eternal inheritance, but we like them are childish, like a childish prince who before his years of maturity can never grasp the enormity of his royal inheritance.

We have little understanding of what God has prepared for us. We have no way to fully comprehend it. But we need to get the finest, the purest, the truest, the widest, deepest, broadest understanding of it we can, because it produces joy in the midst of trouble.
